Framing

Brian Gordy

“Framing exists because of the art. Just as it takes a skillful and sensitive architect to design a building to house a museum’s art collection without drawing attention to itself, it is the job of the picture framer to provide a visual environment within the frame that regards the art at center stage. The framing treatment that shows itself off at the expense of the art is the common problem that occurs, it occurs because of a lack of sensitivity on the part of the framing consultant.”
Brian Gordy

framing

Gordy Fine Art & Framing Co. features a selection of over 5000 frame samples from which to choose. These mouldings include solid hardwoods such as cherry, maple, walnut and oak , as well as burled inlays and hand carved replicas from the past. A large hard to find selection of decorative hand gilded mouldings in tasteful classical finishes may be found at GFAFC as well. Gordys’ also carries an extensive selection of less exotic, but equally suitable framing materials including a full range of contemporary enameled and anodized aluminum mouldings.

Along with the full range of Crescent and Bainbridge matting materials, Gordy’s specializes in fabric-wrapped mats, which can lend strength of texture and a special dignity to the treatment of your artwork. Exotic silks and linens are in stock and available in corner samples to aid in the design process and insure that the best fabric for the art is chosen.

V-Grooves, decorative corners, and unusual custom shaped openings are all a possibility at Gordy’s. Their computerized mat cutter makes multiple openings and decorative effects easy to visualize, and possible to achieve with flawless results. We can design your complex, multiple opening mat on the computer screen at the design station for your approval, and send the cutting instructions electronically.

Preservation

Custom Picture framing by its very nature is an act of preservation. Whether it is a work of art , an historical document, a significant object or memorabilia being framed, the considerations are the same. How can this object be held in suspension, in full visibility, and be completely safe from damage or undue deterioration? Even in the instances where the art being framed is an inexpensive reproduction, the objective is consistent. Because the art itself is not an expensive investment does not mean it should be treated with materials that will show their own deterioration within a few months, therefore compromising the decorative impact of the art, and the cost effectiveness of the framing treatment.

"The framer must be a defender or protector of the artwork given over to his/her care and treatment. He must be careful to recognize its condition and do nothing to lend to its deterioration; in fact do all he is capable of to improve its condition."
