The artworks by Alfredo Marín-Carle now featured on the online store are part of the Visions series. These works of art convey what the artist sees, reflecting his lifetime fascination with eastern philosophies. “In the process of creation, I experience the Buddhist concept of interdependence,” says Marín-Carle, “that nothing exists on its own.” The artist builds up layers and then sands them down. He uses stencils to apply forms and shapes, then rubs them with chemicals and carves deep and aggressive marks that disturb their clarity. In this way he is exploring the creation and destruction always going on around us.
Marín-Carle was born in New York City and later moved with his family to Puerto Rico where he studied art at the Instituto de Cultura de Puerto Rico, Escuela de Artes Plasticas. He was highly influenced by his father, Augusto Marín (an internationally acclaim artist in his own right). Their close relationship played an important role in the growth of his love for art. Alfredo’s young adulthood began with a tour of duty serving in the Vietnam War. Upon his return, he earned his BFA at Wayne State University in Detroit and continuing to earn an MFA at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. In 1985, he joined the faculty at Ball State University, teaching graphic design in the Art department and later the Journalism department. He is now Associate Professor Emeritus and resides in Indianapolis.
